St. Francis of Paola

This statue was installed between August 1670
and March 1673

Sculptor - Francesco Antonio Fontana
He was paid from July 1671 to March 1673 for three statues.

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
He is shown here in a rough tunic with hood, wearing a scapular.  The face is bearded and the right hand is brought to the chest.

The saint was an Italian mendicant friar and founder of the Order of Minims, but never ordained a priest. At the request of Sixtus IV, Francis traveled to Paris to minister to the dying Louis XI.
