The unidentified man climbed over the railing near the top of the dome of St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican on Saturday and initial reports said he wanted to give a message to Pope John Paul (news - web sites). Vatican officials including a bishop were trying to convince the man to return over the railing, but the man more than once refused to grab at what appeared to be a safety sling thrown to him by Vatican fire brigades before later being pulled up.
