St. Francis of Assisi
Born - 1181
Died - 3 October 1226

Feastday - 4 October
Canonized - 1228 by Pope Gregory IX

Statue Installed - 1668
The statue is part of group of 16 built between July and December 1668.

Sculptor - Lazzaro Morelli
Morelli received the most commissions for the colonnade statues, with over 45 saints attributed to him.

St Francis is dressed in a heavy robe tied at the waist by a cord.  The right hand holds a cross that rests on his shoulder.  On his right side a rosary is attached to his belt. The statue is linked to St Bernard (18) for the compact and simplified habit.

Francis founded the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans), the women's Order of St Clare, and the Third Order of St Francis for men and women not able to live as itinerant preachers.
