Vatican Cross.
Gift of the Emperor Justine III (578 AD).

The most ancient object in the Treasury displays a series of mounted cabochon-cut, colored gems (emeralds, jaspers, aquamarines, agates, rock crystal). In the center there is a capsule containing fragments of the Holy Cross. On the arms of the cross there is the dedication of the emperor who sent the votive offering to Rome because of his physical sufferings. The back has some medallions bearing figures: in the center an Agnus Dei; above and below the Savior, in the first representation with the Book, and in the second in blessing; on the two sides, the portraits of Justine II and his wife, Sophia.
