Christmas at St Peter's

HOME <<previous | next>>

At noon on Christmas Day, the Holy Father delivers his traditional Christmas Day "Urbi et Orbi" speech -- Latin for "to the city and to the world" -- from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, in which he often touches on current events and issues of concern to the Vatican. He then is expected to issue Christmas greetings to the faithful in more than 60 languages.

Bethlehem! The city where Jesus was born in fulfilment of the Scriptures, in Hebrew means "house of bread." It was there that the Messiah was to be born, the One who would say of himself: "I am the bread of life" (Jn 6:35, 48).
